Shar Pei - Bear - Large - Adult - Male - Dog
Check out my video: http://youtu.be/oYBYdvhRh-M *Adoption Fully Sponsored!* If you have been reading the updates on Bear, you know that he is a Potters Angels Rescue success story, in the making. Before his rescue, Bear endured unspeakable trauma. But since, he has learned to trust, to play and to love. Bear has been paired with some of our most knowledgeable, patient and confident pack leaders. Today, Bear lives in peace love and harmony in a stable pack, consisting of two humans and one female canine (Nahla). Bear has learned many commands, including: sit, stay, shake, come, down, off, bed, no, and drop it. Bear can be in the midst of an intense game of tug-o-war and his foster parent can say drop it, and he will let go. (However, it is not recommended that Bear engage in tug-o-war until his place in the pack has been clearly established with all humans as leaders, and any other dogs in the home being above him.) Bear has also been taught to sit and wait until given the okay to eat his meals. He will even wait if you turn your back and do other things. This practice has eliminated the problem he used to have of muscling his way into his neighbors food dish. If Bear is told, Bed, he will go and lay down on his bed and he will stay there until he is invited to get up, even if his people leave the room. If you ask Bear who his best friend is, he will give Nahla a pat on the back! (See YouTube video here) He is extremely intelligent and eager to please. Bear has met and responded positively with children ages 5 and 8. The children were told that Bear is special and that they should be calm around him. Bear was relaxed and enjoyed receiving pats on his back from these kind respectful children. Bears interactions with children should be supervised and structured, as he can become overly excited and mouth during play. While he is not being aggressive this kind of rough play is not acceptable behavior around small children. Bear has developed a very special bond with Nahla. He bathes her in kisses and follows her lead. Despite his natural dog fear aggression, Bear has never been aggressive with Nahla. This positive relationship was achieved by his humans providing Bear with very clear and consistent rules. Bear and his foster-sister Nahla are trusted with the run of the house, even when left alone. Bear is not aggressive with Nahla, he is not destructive to property, has no separation anxiety, and is completely housetrained. Bear should never be cratedit is a terrifying place for him, and completely unnecessary. Now that Bears behavior and interactions within a pack and home are positive, his foster parents are focusing more attention on helping him to better manage interactions outdoors with dogs that are not part of his pack. Outside he tends to tense up, whine, and get agitated when seeing another dog (or any animal). His foster parents are working to make this something that is bearable. Bear has come a long way from his first few days with them when seeing another dog resulted in Bear going CRAZY. Despite his struggles with fear/aggression with strange dogs, Bear is a snuggle bug with his pack, he loves to relax and snuggle in bed or on the couch. He also LOVES fetch (although he doesnt quite get the bringing the ball back part). Sometimes they call him Mr. Mopey, for, when he senses that his people are getting ready to leave he will mope around the house, sulking. His foster mom says, He sits there staring at me in the bathroom doorway as I get ready in the morning, giving me puppy eyes with his head dropped real low to the ground, being a mope. He is absolutely adorable when he is working his mopey sad puppy-dog look, and he seems to know exactly what he is doing! He sure does tug at your heart-strings! Bears forever home should not include cats, male dogs, or other small animals. It is possible that Bear could learn to live with a female companion, given the right environment. Providing Bear with a stable pack is key to his continued success. Bear is a 55lb 5 year-old male Pit/Shar Pei-mix. He is neutered, vaccinated a
